    Book Love and a Giveaway!

    Thursday, April 14, 2011

I was very fortunate to grow up in a home where reading was encouraged. The imagination was your greatest gift and every book a new landscape of adventure.

Still an avid reader, I vowed my children would have the same love of books. It never mattered to me if it was the finest literature, just that they had an appreciation for reading. I wanted them to be inspired by words that jumped off the pages of their stories.

I figured if they loved reading in general, eventually they would come around to those fine classics. It wouldn't have to be something their teachers had to push on them, or I had to yearn for them to reach for. In Eldest's case, it's working out that way. Her favorites happen to be in the realm of action/adventure, mysteries, historical fiction and non-fiction.

But tucked away with her most favorite books are some literary treasures that thrill me to no end:

I'm so happy that Eldest is comfortable enough to reach out and grab something new.

And wouldn't these classics with embroidered dust jackets be gorgeous gifts for a voracious reader?

The answer is yes, in case you're wondering!

In any case, we love our books. Being in Tokyo, there are English books available through some bookstores, but the prices...they're a little out of my comfort zone. So we read and re-read, fortunate to get gift cards on birthdays and at Christmas so we can buy new ones.

Eldest just received a shipment of books from her Daddy and I for her birthday and (don't tell her!) she has a few others coming from my parents. God, how that child loves running her fingers over the pages of a book. For us, the Kindle is great to have, but in no way will it replace the joy of an actual book.

Mother's Day is also steadily approaching and as a lover of books, I've been eyeing a few that celebrate cooking, my home in the South, and simple, stylish interior design.

Mind if I share them with you?

I think all of these books are in the "must have" category, but let me say something about the last book, Gwyneth Paltrow's cook book.

I know there are serious haters out there who dislike the big G...for whatever reason. Personally, I love her. So what if she dabbles in a little bit of everything? Isn't that the point of living a fulfilling life? Trying your hand at different things, sometimes falling flat on your face, but enjoying ones self to the fullest anyway? Yes, she's good at her different mediums, but that's because she works hard at it. She takes quiet pride in her efforts and shares them with others.

As bloggers, many of us do the same thing: share our passions and talents with a vast audience. I want to believe it's done in the spirit of generosity, encouraging others to celebrate their own gifts and abilities. And none are too small.

So celebrate! There's too much enjoyment taken in seeing people knocked down and disparaged, and far too much glee in bad-mouthing people we don't even know.

In the spirit of celebrating those who inspire, this Southern Lady is hosting a giveaway!

Simply leave a comment telling me who you are inspired by, why, and if they're a blogger, a link to their blog. Whoever this person is, tell me why you feel so moved by them.

It will give you a single entry for...you guessed it! Gwyneth's new cook book!

    bookmothersday

The giveaway begins the moment you read this, and will end promptly at midnight, central US time, Friday, April 22. The winner will be announced on April 23!

Give props to those who make your life a little (or alot) brighter! You'll be glad you did.

There are hundreds of wonderful people I could pick. It's really impossible to choose a favorite! But I'm going to go with a great blog you may not know about but that I think you'd really enjoy browsing through: http://www.myjuicecup.com/ -- brimming with delightful ideas for parties, food, projects, etc.

I was just reading a preview of Gwyneth's book in a magazine. It sounds great! I hope I win! :)

This is really a tough one because I am inspired by all the bloggers I read (or I wouldn't be reading them!) Some I read just for fun, just to see what new fashions, decorating or recipes they have out and some I read for daily inspiration, such as http://www.flythroughourwindow.com/ Fly Through Our Window and various blogs that have book reviews (or book review tabs like mine). I've also recently started looking more at exercise and eating blogs, trying to help make my familly become a little healthier. More than you wanted to know, I'm sure! :-)

    I love Gwyneth....

I love your sentiments on doing what you love, even if it means going against the norm.

    Hello

I just found your blog through Surburban Princess. You have a lovely blog, and lovely story, actually.

    I will be following you.

As for inspiration, that is a hard one, but I think my husband inspires me the most.

    Hope I'm not too late.

My wedding planners are inspiring me lately. With my inspiration board and design plan they created, I can see the vision for my big day! They are two sweet, southern gals, full of great ideas and creative solutions. They inspired me to take a chance on a venue, which is turning out to be AMAZING. I love these gals.

I have 2 suggestions for more books for Maddy: C.S. Lewis' space trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. Lewis also wrote The Screwtape Letters which you would probably like but may want to hold back from Maddy for a few years. I think I was in 8th or 9th grade when I read it. The girls and I really liked Madeline L'Engle who wrote such things as Swiftly Tilting Planet and A Wrinkle in Time among many others. Enjoy.

Just found your lovely blog and am anxious to read through older posts. I'm a fan of GP. I know she takes a lot of bashing because of her blog but I admire her in that she has so many interests. She so easily could sit back and simply live the glamorous life without giving back, but she continues to do what she likes and excels in everything she tries.

On a non-celebrity note, my mother inspires me daily. She is a strong proud woman for more reasons than I could list here.

Thanks for hosting this giveaway. I'd love to won her book.

What fun! I was just "eyeballing" Gwynnie's book in Target yesterday. And I'm with you, I love her!

I'm inspired by Kath of Kath Eats Real Food (www.katheats.com). She eats well and drinks well but keeps everything in check. She makes exercise a priority and is a great blogger.

I definitely turn to bloggers for inspiration. In terms of my favorite, it would definitely be darby at www.flythroughourwindow.com
She always covers life in such a realistic tone that I would not mind emulating her in more ways. I also love thestorywood.com blog for her amazing pictures and raw openness!

There are so many people that inspire me that it's hard to choose just one! I think my father would be at the top of my list. His amazing love and passion for life constantly inspires me to be the best person I can be. Truly blessed!

Such a sweet giveaway! I have several wonderful people who inspire me. How blessed! But since this is a blog giveaway, it seems only fitting to tell you about my Bestie. She is a true inspiration. So strong in her love and faith. So determined to reach her goals. And such a beautiful friend, inside and out. She's had a lot of down moments in the last few years on her road to become a mother. But she is so honest and hunbled in her faith. She never fails to praise God, even in her lowest moments. I want to be like her when I grow up (because you know, she is a whopping three months older than me...the older we get, the more that seems to matter)!

Go give my Bestie some blog love...
